Quick update for all AR’s:

For the past several weeks we have been working to support pre-k and special education educators in addressing their working conditions as the rest of the district has shifted to remote. Please help us spread the word and encourage any pre-k or sped colleagues you have to get involved. See below for more information and action steps they are working on.

Preschool Educators & Learning Specialists Unite for Safety for ALL

Over the past few weeks, JCEA leaders and staff have heard from many of our Jeffco educators working in pre-k and special education about the current plan for these groups to remain in person while the rest of our district has shifted to remote.

We quickly launched a survey, started holding group meetings and worked to identify both issues and solutions that those educators are ready to work towards. Together, you all can accomplish things that tend to be impossible alone.

One of the most concerning matters is that Jeffco is not currently tracking or reporting COVID cases in these programs separately- which makes it difficult to truly understand how these groups are or are not being impacted. If we are to make decisions based on data and science we must have that information disaggregated from the general reporting that is currently being used.

Based on the feedback we have gotten so far, 70% of pre-k and SPED educators support asking the district to move those students and programs remote immediately.

While everyone recognizes that in person is the ideal learning model, COVID-19 cases continue to rise and the holidays are likely to make a bad situation even worse. The health and safety of our students and staff must be prioritized as the COVID numbers in the communities around us reach staggering new heights.

A core group of pre-k and special education activists have drafted and launched a petition asking district leadership to commit to shifting these groups to remote learning along with the rest of our students and staff. All pre-k and special education professionals are invited to join this effort.
