What feels powerful to you?
On September 3rd, JCEA is headed to the Jeffco school board with a petition asking that they commit to investing in educator compensation.
What message will we send when we get there?
So far about 1,400 Jeffco educators have signed on in support – we are off to a great start, but the reality is, it’s going to take a super majority of Jeffco educators supporting this work to compel district leadership to take action. If you haven’t already, it’s time to use all of your tools to outreach your colleagues – JCEA members and non-members to ask them to join us.
How would it feel to present thousands and thousands of signatures on September 3rd?
Text. Email. Share on social media. Host a virtual JCEA stand up meeting. Pick up the phone – we’ve done our part to make it easy to access and share, but we need your support to clearly illustrate that this issue is important. Important enough that people are willing to take action.
Remote learning and professional development

Celebrating one of our own
2020 Earth Science Teacher of the Year Awards
Two Colorado science teachers are recipients of the Earth Science Teacher of the Year Award given by The Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists (RMAG) and the RMAG Foundation. The awardees are Matt Thomas, science teacher at Alameda International High School in Lakewood and Merideth Sparks, science teacher at Craver Middle School in Colorado City.
Matt Thomas earned a Bachelor’s in General Science and Earth Science and a Master’s in Secondary Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education. He utilizes the excellent geology available in Colorado to get his students outside and learn about geology through experience was well as classroom studies augmented with web-based/digital experiences. He also exposes them to the next steps in their geology education and geology careers through the Mining for Talent program, a partnership between Jefferson County Public Schools and Colorado School of Mines. He has been teaching for 22 years.
Matt says: “Receiving this award is a great honor. Being my first ever teaching award, it feels amazing to be acknowledged by colleagues and industry professionals for something that I have been passionate about for the past 20 years. I am excited to see how many more doors open to help my students and myself with more experiential and hands-on learning in the geosciences at Alameda International.”
Andrea Sabadosh, assistant principal at Alameda High, said, “The Alameda International family is proud to have Matt Thomas as a member of our teaching community. His love of the Earth, the science that makes it thrive and teaching to develop that love in his students is evident in everything he does. He has a tremendous spirit, and it is infused in every lesson he teaches! We cannot think of a more deserving educator to receive this honor.”

District Collaborative Monitoring Committee: COVID-19, School, and Learning
As Jeffco Public Schools begins the 2020-21 school year under the spectrum of COVID-19 in which learning conditions appear very differently, the District and interim superintendent will create a collaborative committee to monitor conditions in our community and schools. This committee will be tasked with making data-informed consensus recommendations to the interim superintendent for consideration of adjustment to the District’s educational delivery plans or working conditions.
The committee will include members of our invested partner associations, our community (parents and citizens), and district administrators. If you are interested, please read more on the application and complete by September 3, 2020.
