Every year the JCEA Small Donor Committee, composed of members like you, meets to take positions on candidates and issues that affect public education.

Wondering what politics have to do with your students and classroom? Decisions about your salary, testing, school budgets, retirement benefits, and much more are made by our elected school board, state legislature, state board of education, and federal government. Moreover, ballot issues that have huge impacts on our students, like state tax rates, school funding, and local mill levy and bond issues, are regularly decided by voters. This is why it’s vital that educators talk to voters every election to let them know about the impact their vote has on our classrooms.

For more than 30 years, Colorado’s outdated revenue cap has limited how much our state can invest in public schools. Even when Colorado already collects the revenue, the cap blocks those dollars from reaching classrooms. That underfunding makes it harder to pay educators livable wages, keep experienced teachers and ESPs in the profession, lower class sizes, and expand career and technical education programs students need.

Prop NN gives voters the chance to update the 1992 cap and allow Colorado to invest the revenue it already collects in K-12 public education, without raising taxes or changing anyone’s tax bracket. It also requires an independent public audit each year so Coloradans can see how new dollars are spent.

JCEA supports Jeffco 5A & 5B.

Jeffco ranks 9 out of 10 in teacher pay and recieves $140 million less in school funding in comparison with neighboring metro districts. This is why our educator leaders of the Jefferson County Education Association (JCEA) took a unanimous vote of support for the Jeffco Public Schools mill levy initiatives, 5A and 5B (press release).

Volunteer

While our recommendations are important to helping candidates win their elections and stopping harmful ballot initiatives, we also know we need to volunteer our time to talk to voters. This is how we ensure the people in our community know how our public schools could be affected this election and why we need them to vote!
