What can I say & when?
It’s election time and we know this time of year there can be some confusion about what you can communicate with your members. Here is guidance around when you can communicate with members in their building, and when you can and cannot use school email:
DO NOT
- Discuss specific election positions (for candidates and ballots issues) with potential members (unless specifically asked).
- Email members with recommendations for candidates or issues over district email.
- Share sensitive information that you would not want released publicly over district email. Colorado’s Open Records Act allows all public records to be open for inspection by any person at reasonable times, upon request, with some exception for personally identifiable information.
Do!
- Hold your 10 minute JCEA meeting at any time that does not interfere with educators’ responsibilities for teaching and/or other school activities (So feel free to talk to people after school, at lunch, or on your mutual planning time!). See 3-6 of the JCEA Contract.
- Use email to communicate with members about anything else that is not specifically mentioned in the “don’t” section. Invite them to your 10 minute meeting, share the bargaining survey, remind them to wear their JCEA Blue… it’s ok to use district email! See 3-5 of the JCEA Contract.
- You can also use your school mailboxes, the pony, or post information on your school bulletin board. See 3-5 of the JCEA Contract.
Election Time!
With just over a month until election day, it’s vital you talk to your members about volunteering and making a plan to vote. We know that in order for public education advocates to get elected and bad ballot measures defeated, we need to talk to voters. There are a number of upcoming volunteer events, and with only 9 days until ballots are mailed to voters, the clock is ticking to make sure our students and public schools WIN on November 5th! Visit our election page to sign up and spread the word!
